Herbal tea: vital substance and health care


Some drink it for its healing effect, others make a cult out of it. Tea is more popular than ever. He should make slim, protect against cancer and keep the heart fit. Everything just humbug? And above all: Does this only apply to "real" tea from the tea plant or even for herbal teas and fruit teas? Learn more about the various types of herbal tea available, their ingredients and effects.

Polyphenols in tea

Tea is considered healthy. Reason for this are in particular the so-called polyphenols. These substances are also found in red wine, which - yes enjoyed in moderation - a health-promoting effect is awarded. In America, there are even a number of commercial preparations containing polyphenol extracts of tea and / or red wine.

Polyphenols are found mainly in "real" tea, so for example in black, white and green tea. Herbal and fruit teas also contain polyphenols. But herbal teas have many other positive health effects.

Herbal teas and their effects

Herbal teas do not come from tea shrubs, but from dried plant parts of other plants. They contain - like the "real" teas too - no calories. But they provide vitamins, minerals and essential oils with health-promoting properties. However, they lack the caffeine (exception: Matetee).

We show what is in the different teas:

  • Brennesseltee
    Nettle leaves are characterized by their content of vitamins and minerals. In kidney diseases, nettle tea should not be used!
    Effects: draining, diuretic, invigorating, invigorating.
  • fennel
    The fennel fruits contain essential oil, the main component of which is the bitter fechenone and the sweet anethole.
    Effects: Helps with bloating, cramps, nausea, abdominal pain and is anti-inflammatory.
  • Camomile tea
    Chamomile flowers contain essential oils whose main constituent is the azulene. The tea should always be drunk hot, because otherwise much of its flavor is lost.
    Effects: is anti-inflammatory, helps with flatulence.
  • lime blossom tea
    Linden flowers contain only few essential oils. Their ingredient Farnesol provides for the pleasant taste.
    Effects: drunk hot sweaty, soothing.
  • Melissa tea
    The lemon balm leaves spread an intense lemon fragrance. The reason for this are the essential oils contained in the balm.
    Effects: Helps with bloating, cramps, nausea, abdominal pain; has a calming effect.
  • Mate tea
    The leaves are dried (green mate) and then roasted, creating the dark brown color and the spicy taste.
    Effects: stimulating, digestive, diuretic.
  • peppermint tea
    Peppermint leaves contain 2 - 5% essential oils (up to 60% menthol). In addition, tannins and bitter substances are present. They cause the bitter taste when the tea pulls too long.
    Effects: good for flatulence, spasms, nausea, abdominal pain; is anti-inflammatory, helps with toothache, is soothing, beneficial for colds (steam bath).

Rosehip tea as fruit tea

Fruit teas can also have a positive effect on your health. For example, the rosehip tea: The fruits of the dogrose contain tannins, fruit acids, essential oils and vitamin C. Mature rosehips are among the most vitamin C-rich fruits.

Effects: Rosehip tea protects against colds.
