The Aronia melanocurpa is little known here on land. Perhaps it is familiar to a few people under the name of oregano (or bald oregano). It is estimated in Eastern Europe for several decades as an effective medicinal plant. Visually rather inconspicuous, one could almost confuse the Aronia berry with the blueberry - while the berries of the Aronia plant have a healthier effect.
Aronia: effect and origin
Originally from eastern North America, the aronia plant came to Russia in the 19th century. Since the mid-20th century, it was used in the then Soviet Union for healing purposes. As a result, the chokeberry is not only particularly well suited for high blood pressure, medicines for capillary toxicosis, certain types of gastritis and bleeding are also obtained from the aronia berry.
Furthermore, the Aronia plant is used as a remedy for allergies, stomach disorders, liver and biliary disorders and childhood diseases, and has a positive effect on the immune system, blood formation and the regeneration of bone and muscle tissue.
Appleberry protects against free radicals
The Aronia plant is a versatile remedy because it is a folic acid, vitamin C, vitamin K and flavonoid. Many diseases of our modern society are triggered by unstable oxygen molecules, which we call free radicals. They affect the cell metabolism and cause oxidative stress, which can lead to serious sequelae. It also speeds up the aging process.
The aronia is rich in phytochemicals, which counteract all this. The free radicals are bound by the high proportion of antioxidants. Since free radicals can also influence the development of cancers, the regular consumption of apple berries can be cancer-preventive. Also, the Aronia berry is a remedy for damage from solar radiation and skin diseases - even in the case of radiation sickness, the chokeberry is used. Thus, the aronia has the potential to become the new anti-aging elixir of tomorrow.
Environmentally conscious people can also prevent arteriosclerosis and nerve damage by consuming aronia. Sometimes the weed is also said to have a positive influence on mental illness.
Aronia juice or aronia jam?
The aronia has a small drawback, however: Despite their relatively high sugar content, apple berries have a bitter taste, so that many people prefer to drink aronia juice or spread aronia jam on the bread. But you should not overdo it. A water-diluted glass of Aronia juice (Aronia pure juice still has a relatively tart taste) is enough daily. Because with increased consumption can also stomach problems occur.
Instead of water, the Aronia juice can also be mixed with other fruit juices or enjoyed by further processing as lemonade. In the Soviet Union, the aronia berry was also used for the processing of sweets. As ready-made products of the chokeberry are rarely available in Germany, you can also try some of the aronia recipes yourself.
Recipe: Aronia milkshake
- 400g of aronia berries
- 1l whole milk
- 200g cream
- Sweeten with honey or sugar at will
The washed aronia berries are processed with a blender or puree stick to make. Pass the mus through a fine sieve, stir with whipped cream and milk. Beat everything again until frothy and sweeten to taste. This and other Aronia recipes spice up any summer game; Aronia berries, cream yoghurt, egg yolk, powdered sugar and vanilla sugar can all be used to conjure up a refreshing Aronia ice cream. Incidentally, like the raisin, you can also dry the aronia berry.
A little hint: The frozen apple-berry loses its intense, tart taste.
