Pregnant and traveling, that does not fit together? In fact, distant lands, grueling long-haul flights, heat, stress, unfamiliar food and questionable sanitary conditions pose many dangers to both mother and child. With our tips, you can still go on vacation despite the babybump. Couples, who want to enjoy one more time, the married togetherness before the birth of their child on a trip together, should choose the second trimester of pregnancy. Within this time, the mother and embryo are out of the woods: the morning sickness and initial difficulties are overcome and the unborn child is less sensitive and vulnerable. At the same time, in the fourth, fifth and sixth months, the stomach is not so big that it would disturb and cause back pain. Before traveling, you should plan well, consult with your gynecologist and worry about the right destination and the best means of transport.

Pregnant travel by plane

In the last eight weeks before the delivery date, pregnant women are only allowed to travel on most airlines with a special permit and medical certificate, because the risk of premature and abortion increases significantly. By contrast, between the fourth and the seventh month nothing speaks against a flight. The increased radiation at higher altitudes and the cabin pressure can not affect the embryo.

Keep in mind, however, that the risk of thrombosis increases for long-haul flights, especially for pregnant women, and wear appropriate compression stockings. Take care in advance of a place in the corridor to be able to move the legs and have a shorter way to the toilet. In case of a risk pregnancy, you should always consult with your doctor first, because here the physical stress of a flight can be a danger to mother and child. Pregnant travel by car

In general, a car ride during pregnancy is nothing in the way. If you can drive to work, to shop or to a doctor by car, why not go on vacation? Keep in mind, however, that pregnant women are often prone to fatigue, lack of concentration and nausea. For longer trips, it is therefore advisable to take turns with your travel companion or let yourself be driven straight away.

Plan enough breaks for restroom use and rest, because the lack of freedom of movement in a narrow car is quite exhausting, especially for pregnant women. Be sure to properly fasten yourself. The strap should run between the breasts and below the abdomen. So all internal organs are optimally protected.

Pregnant travel by train

If you can reach your destination by train, you should prefer this mode of transport over the others. Here you have plenty of space and freedom of movement, can stand in the corridor legs and do not need to stop for each pause break extra. Stress factors such as traffic jams or the height difference in the plane do not exist here. Plan transfer times rather generously so as not to get stressed out unnecessarily. No matter which means of transport you travel with, always carry enough fluid with you. It should be a 1.5 liter bottle of water in any case.

Destinations in pregnancy

Think well in advance where to go. Goals that you can achieve in less than four hours are optimal, because longer travel times are extremely stressful for pregnant women. The climate at the destination should be neither tropical nor wet and cold. Optimal temperatures are between 20 and 28 degrees. Mountain tours in thin altitudes, adventure tours or camel rides through the desert are a great burden for the already strained circulation of pregnant women.

Better play it safe and book a package holiday in the Mediterranean or in more moderate altitudes such as South Tyrol, Austria or Switzerland. If you're on holiday in Europe, you'll be spared any stressors like jet lag, extreme climatic fluctuations, exotic diseases and unfamiliar food. Those who still prefer the (far) distance, should consult with his gynecologist in advance and check the vaccination requirements of the desired goal. Especially for tropical destinations often vaccinations are required, which harbor risks for pregnant women or are even prohibited. In general, expectant mothers should only be vaccinated if absolutely necessary. So think carefully before, whether you want to do yourself and your child these strains.

Checklist before the trip

So that you and your unborn baby are optimally well cared for, even at the sunny destination, you should inform yourself in advance about the medical treatment options on site. If you need medication, have it prescribed by the doctor before you travel, and take too much rather than too little. Keep in mind that language barriers may be present at the doctor abroad. Especially in remote areas, you can not rely on every doctor speaking English.

Also, be aware that your ten-year-old school French may not be enough to tell the doctor your symptoms in detail. Check with your health insurance for the scope of the international health insurance and also take out a travel cancellation insurance for emergencies.

In many countries, the hygiene conditions are not German. So keep an eye out for where and what you eat, drink water from the bottle rather than the tap, and wash fruit before you eat it. Better than in a hotel you can pay attention to how hygienic and clean the food is prepared in a holiday apartment.

As a general rule, whether you are in the Black Forest or Australia, travel only when you are calm and free from worries and concerns. Because if you only spend the whole holiday in the hotel, out of fear to endanger yourself and your baby, then you should rather stay at home and relax on balcony. Carefree, easy-going women, on the other hand, can enjoy their holidays and the anticipation of their child at distant destinations.
