A pregnancy is nice, but also very exhausting - both for the mental health, as well as for the skin of pregnant women. The abdomen now needs special care and also the body and facial care must be changed frequently, since the hormonal changes can have a strong effect on the skin.

Expert interview about skin care in pregnancy

Dr. med. Bernd Kleine-Gunk, chief physician of gynecology at the Euromed Clinic Fürth and specialist in aesthetic medicine provides answers on what matters in the care now.

Question: Dr. Small gunk, a pregnancy also means great changes for the skin. The risk of stretch marks is known to most women, so the belly needs special care. What can you recommend?

Dr. Kleine-Gunk: Stretch marks are the most common cosmetic problem at this time.

They sometimes appear late, when the stomach is really round. For this reason, it is important to start with suitable skin care as early as possible, which prepares the skin for stretching. Nourishing oils on a natural basis with ingredients such as vitamin E have proven particularly useful here.

Question: Which areas should one massage?

Dr. Kleine-Gunk: All skin areas affected by volume increase should be properly maintained. So the stomach and the chest, because it can also come here by the increase in size to stretch marks.

Treat water retention

Question: Many women complain of water retention during pregnancy. The result is swollen legs and eyelids. What do you have to consider?

Dr. Kleine-Gunk: Minimal water retention is relatively common and harmless, and may be limited by cold fuzziness, high legs, or limited by the use of chilled creams.

More water retention, especially if they are associated with hypertension, may indicate medical complications - so pregnant women who notice water retention should definitely visit their gynecologist.

Facial care is important

Question: Do you have to change the facial care now?

Dr. Kleine-Gunk: The facial skin is now particularly sensitive. Mild products with a skin-neutral, slightly acidic pH of 5.5 are not irritating and keep the skin in balance. It is important now to use a face cream that protects the skin from UVA and UVB rays. The hormonal changes make the skin now very sensitive to the sun, which can lead to pigmentary disorders.

They are often located on the cheekbones, upper lip and chin and usually go back spontaneously after pregnancy, but they are very disturbing at the moment.

Sunbathing is taboo

Question: Should not you sunbathe during your pregnancy?

Dr. Kleine-Gunk: Protecting facial skin with high sun protection factors is an absolute must during pregnancy. Visits to the solarium are taboo, as pigmentation disorders are largely triggered by UVA radiation. UVA radiation penetrates window glass almost completely and is very strong even in cloudy skies - so it is important to apply a protective day cream, even when the sun is not shining.

Sunbathing should be avoided. For stays in the sun, clothing is the best protection - a wide-brimmed hat effectively protects facial skin and does not stress the skin!
